āWhen the breath is unsteady, the mind is unsteady.ā ā Hatha Yoga Pradipika
Breathing might seem like the most natural thing in the world, but in yoga, breath becomes an intentional, powerful tool that links the body and the mind.
š¬ļø Why Breath Matters in Yoga
In every yoga class, youāve probably heard your instructor say āDonāt forget to breathe.ā This isnāt just a reminder to stay alive ā itās a nudge to stay present.
Breath (pranayama) is one of the foundational limbs of yoga. It calms the nervous system, anchors the mind, and helps guide you safely in and out of poses. When you focus on your breathing, you deepen your connection to the present moment, and thatās where the magic of yoga truly begins.
š Practice Tip: Breathe Into the Pose
Inhale to create space: As you breathe in, imagine your lungs expanding and your body softening.
Exhale to release: Let go of tension, stress, and resistance as you exhale.
Allow your breath to guide your movement: Especially in Vinyasa or flow classes, let each inhale and exhale lead the transition from one pose to another.
Try this:Ā Next time youāre in a pose, ask yourself ā Can I breathe more fully here?
